Micro Silica

Microsilica is a key ingredient in advanced low, ultra-low and cement-free castables. It is highly reactive during sintering, which leads to improved ceramic bonding at reduced firing temperatures. Microsilica is also utilised in mortars, gunning mixes and other unshaped materials.

Physical properties of Microsilica

Microsilica is an amorphous silicon dioxide (silica) consisting of sub-micron

spherical primary particles and agglomerates of these. The material is highly

reactive in cementitious and ceramic bond systems.

The average diameter of a microsilica sphere is about 0.15 micron. Although

some of the spheres exist as single entities, most of them form primary

agglomerates. The size of these may vary between 0.1 and 1 micron. This

rather wide particle size distribution contributes to high packing efficiency.

Microsilica will also contain secondary agglomerates (typically 5 - 50

microns), often generated during filtration and collection. These are -

unlike the primary agglomerates - easily broken down when the powder is

dispersed in a liquid.

Microsilica has no internal porosity, and the specific gravity of microsilica is

about 2.3 g/cm3. The specific surface area may vary between 15 and 30 m2/

g.

Birm Media for Iron Removal

Birm is a black granular filter material which is widely used for removal of iron and manganese from water. It contains an active insoluble catalyst to precipitate iron and manganese. Because the presence of iron is most common now a days in water , iron removal is the usual application for birm. Under suitable conditions, the iron and dissolved oxygen in water react on contact with the birm filter bed and, as a result, the iron is precipitated in the form of hydroxide. This is a flocculent material which is filtered out in the bed of birm. the ph must be above 6. 8 and dissolved oxygen content must be equal to 15% of the iron and manganese content. No regeneration is required, only periodic backwashing.

Precipitated Silica

PRECIPITATED SILICA

Precipitated silica is a silica (SiO2) produced by precipitation from a solution containing silicate salts. It is mainly used in tires and shoe soles.

Production proces

The production of precipitated silica starts with the reaction of an alkaline silicate solution with a mineral acid. Sulfuric acid and sodium silicate solutions are added simultaneously with agitation to water. Precipitation is carried out under alkaline conditions. The choice of agitation, duration of precipitation, the addition rate of reactants, their temperature and concentration, and pH can vary the properties of the silica. The formation of a gel stage is avoided by stirring at elevated temperatures. The resulting white precipitate is filtered, washed and dried in the manufacturing process.

Applications

Pesticides

precipitated silica is used as a carrier and diluent because in comparison with cheaper clays, it has high absorption, easier suspensibility, better compatibility with most toxicants and better stability. Even after extended storage under tropical condition.

Printing Ink : precipitated silica is used a s a thickening and suspending agent, to prevent set off and picking, to heighten brilliance.

Tooth Paste and Tooth Powder : MAHAV precipitated silica is used in the manufacturing of tooth powder like normal, medicated and transparent tooth paste. MAHAV precipitated silica when added to tooth powder or tooth paste acts as a good abrasive agent, thereby cleaning the teeth thoroughly the transparency of highly porous and high surface area of silica permits the development of transparent tooth paste.

Salt : MAHAV precipitated silica provides free flowing characteristics in salt and prevents caking. It dose not effect on taste, odour, colour and nature of the salt.

Coatings : MAHAV precipitated silica is used as thickening, thixotropic, antisettling agent and as matting agent at high concentration. It also reduces gloss of trade sale clear oil modified urethane varnish. It gives satin sheen in nitrocellulose furniture lacquer. It is also preferred in aluminum extrusion coating and coil coating with long guaranteed life, to reduce gloss at all viewing angles. It is gaining use in high solid pigmented metal office furniture finish.

Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica because it is produced in a flame, consists of microscopic droplets of amorphous silica fused into branched, chainlike, three-dimensional secondary particles which then agglomerate into tertiary particles. The resulting powder has an extremely low bulk density and high surface area. Its three-dimensional structure results in viscosity-increasing, thixotropic behavior when used as a thickener or reinforcing fille.

 

Properties

Fumed silica has a very strong thickening effect. Primary particle size is 5–50 nm. The particles are non-porous and have a surface area of 50–600 m2/g. Density 160–190 kg/

 

Applications

Fumed silica serves as a universal thickening agent and an anticaking agent (free-flow agent) in powders. Like silica gel, it serves as a desiccant. It is used in cosmetics for its light-diffusing properties. It is used as a light abrasive, in products like toothpaste. Other uses include filler in silicone elastomer and viscosity adjustment in paints, coatings, printing inks, adhesives and unsaturated polyester resins. USED IN CONSTRUCTIONS AS A LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

 

  1. Calcium silicate boards: exfoliated vermiculite is added to a calcium silicate slurry, this is then dewatered by pressing or by using one of the Fourdriner/Magnani/Hatschek processes to form a flat board which is then heat cured under pressure (typically 10-15 bar) for periods up to 24 hours.

  2. As a hot topping: both exfoliated and crude vermiculite have been used for hot topping in the steel industry. When poured onto molten metal crude vermiculite exfoliates immediately and forms an insulating layer allowing the material to be transported to the next production process without losing too much heat.

  3. Used to permit slow cooling of hot pieces in glassblowing, lampwork, steelwork, and glass beadmaking

Used in in-ground swimming pools to provide a smooth pool base: Finer grades of exfoliated vermiculite plus Portland cement may be combined either on site or a factory premix to provide a base for swimming pool vinyl liners. Refractory/Insulation gunning and castable mixes: It can be combined with high alumina (also known as calcium aluminate) cements and other aggregates such as expanded shale, clay and slate to produce refractory/insulation concretes and mortars. In the early days of their uses these products were batched at or very close to the place of installation, this continues to be the case in some limited circumstances, however more and more use is being made of pre-batched proprietary mixes. Mixes containing vermiculite are used in areas where strength and corrosion/abrasion resistance are of secondary importance, the most important factor being the insulation performance of the in place refractory lining. These mixes find their uses in such areas in industries including iron/steel, cement and hydrocarbon processing
